Apple have faced criticism for their new Maps app in iOS 6.  Apple replaced Google Maps and decided to make their own version for the release of the iPhone 5 and their latest operating system.  Here are the problems with the new app:

  • Some places don't exist
  • Some cities have magically reverted back to their previous names
  • Search is not accurate in some cases (for example: Search "Manchester United Football Club")
  • Some places are not in the correct place on the map
  • Quality is not as good (See picture comparison)

Some developers criticised the App before the commercial release of iOS6, suggesting that it was poor compared to Google's version.
TomTom who supplied data to Apple said that it was willing to cooperate to improve the App.  Apple have also said that they will work hard to improve the App.

We are yet so see a Google Maps app appear on the App Store, however there is a Google earth app which has been there for a long time and is still, arguably, better than Apple Maps.
