3D printing: Mobile Phone cases

3D printers are becoming more and more popular, however they're still not something that everybody has in their home.  In fact very few people actually have 3D printers in their home, due to the fact that they're still expensive and (at the moment) there aren't too many things you can print.  However, lots of business are investing in 3D printing and some big companies are also backing 3D printing.

The latest company to do this is Nokia.  Nokia is backing 3D printing by releasing design files which will let anyone be able to print a 3D case for their Lumia phones.  This makes them the first big phone maker to seriously back 3D printing.   The way the printing would work is by a computer sending the design file to the printer which would then print the design by layering up plastics.  Newer printers are able to print colours, making it possible to easily print your own designs onto a phone case.

Most business that produce consumer products, including Nokia, use 3D printers to create early prototypes of their products.
It is though that 3D printers will eventually become household objects and that the could even replace buying products (that could be printed).  For example, you won't need to go out and buy a phone case because you could just download a file and print it.  Some analysts also suspect that 3D printers may become so complex that you will even be able to print things like mobile phones etc.  However, it is clear that this technology is still quite far away.
