Gangstar Rio: City of saints- iOS app/game review

By Admin 06 October 2012

First of all, we tested this app on iPad 2 but it is also available on iPhone 4S and some older, as well as iPod touch 4G.

In the game, you start as a gang member and basically you go around doing whatever you want. It is very similar to Grand theft auto.  There are also missions which you can do. These help you gain money and "respect" from your other gang members.
iPhone Screenshot 3Some of the things you can do in the freeplay side of the game include, hijacking cars, motorbikes, vans etc. You can also get other transport vehicles including aeroplanes and helicopters as well as a new feature: jetpacks.  These are fun, but to be able to get a plane, you need money and to be at a far enough level.  To advance in levels, you need to get 'respect'. You can get this by killing people, doing jumps in vehicles you've hijacked, doing wheelies on motorbikes etc. You will also need money. You get money by using in app purchases or by killing people in the game. To kill people in the game you can either beat them up or purchase a gun/ sword from the weapons shop. (Hint: killing people in suits will earn you 210 whereas normal people will only get you 5).
iPhone Screenshot 4If, however, you kill to many people you can get chased by the police.  You can run away to escape, but if you start to kill policemen then more police will come and eventually start shooting you.
If you become injured then you can by medical packs, and you can find them in various places around the map.
The map isn't particularly large, but it isn't bad and has many different areas to enjoy.
The game graphics are good for an ipad/ iPhone game and look particularly good on the new iPad's retina display and will presumably look just as good on the iPhone 5.

iPhone Screenshot 1There are some downsides to the game, though.  To have such good graphics the game does eat you battery away quite quickly. As Well as this, the game can sometimes just cut out and return you to your home screen without a warning or error message. This can be particularly annoying because the game does take a considerable amount of time to boot up.

When we bought the game, it was on special offer at 69p. This is a very good deal and is probably too little for a game of such high quality.  Now, though, it has returned to the normal £4.99.  This would be a good price if it wasn't for the minor bugs such as the game randomly cutting out for no obvious reason.  Something that EA do, in our opinion, get rid of is in app purchases.  If you going to pay 5 pounds for the app then you really shouldn't have to pay in app purchases on top of this.
Overall, the app gets a 3.7/5 star rating.
