Ello.co is a new and upcoming social network which has been formed on two promises which it can never break; they will never sell your data nor will they host adverts on your website.  Due to their legal structure, these promises must be upheld by the owners and by any future owners.

However, you aren't able to sign up immediately.  The social network, which was launched in August of this year, has, currently, 1 million users but according to Ello there are 3 million on the waiting list.  If you go on to the website, you are presented with a clean interface where at the top you are invited to request an 'invite' to join the website by entering your email address.  Do this, like I did, and you are presented with their 'manifesto' shown below:

At the bottom of this screen, you're presented with two options.  Clicking 'I agree' presents you with options to share the manifesto on all the other social networks which they criticise; Facebook, Twitter etc. which is slightly ironic.  Clicking the latter option, however, rather amusingly takes you to Facebook's privacy policies (facebook.com/about/privacy).

They may be on to something though.  Investors have put in £3.4 million and this is growing- as is the company as a whole.  Quoted by the BBC, Ello founder Paul Budnitz said:
"You get an iPhone and it comes with basic apps - you can call, text and so on, but everybody buys apps because they want to customise their experience.

"While Ello has grown incredibly fast, we still have 14 staff... We're adding a few more people to help handle growth - but because we're not selling ads or mining data, there's a whole load of people we don't need to hire."
