Panasonic launch smartphone-camera hybrid

By Admin 16 September 2014
Electronic manufacturer Panasonic have unveiled the Lumix DMC-CM1, an Android device which features a 20MP camera 1in lens.  The device, which is capable of capturing ultra-high definition video, will go on sale later this year in France and Germany for the price of £720 (EUR900).

This type of device is not new to the market, however.  Samsung, for example, have had camera-focused phones out for years- such as the Samsung Galaxy K Zoom.  Like Samsung's offering, the CM1 runs Android OS with a full touchscreen.  It even has a dedicated switch that will put the device in camera mode.

Saying that, Panasonic is keen to stress that the device is a camera first which just happens to double up as a smartphone.  This leaves us to ask the question: What's the point?

Comment

Smartphone-camera hybrids haven't yet taken off- and there is a likely reason for that.  Currently these devices do not offer the best of both worlds.  Instead they are a compromise- neither a top end phone nor a decent camera.  Unfortunately this pleases nobody.  For people who like to take the odd picture on their phone, cameras on high end smartphones are good enough and take high-quality pictures.  For those who take lots of pictures regularly, or even take pictures just on holidays, a dedicated camera is a much better choice- particularly if you take into account the price tag.  Therefore, this compromise is not pleasing anybody and has a long way to come before entering the mainstream market.
