So, once you've got passed the lock screen, you get to the start screen. you may have heard the term "Metro" before. This is it. It's the UI which is the layout of tiles which includes the apps you have on your tablet or PC. As you download new apps, they are added as tiles to the start screen. However, not everything is on the start screen. For example, you have to go to the desktop to open programs like Word, PowerPoint etc. When you get to the desktop page, it's basically just the same as Windows 7, just with a few new features integrated between it and the start screen. A new feature on the desktop is the charm bar. This is on the right side of your screen and can be easily brought up at any time. On this charm bar, it features things such as "settings", "Search", "share" and, of course, a link to the start menu.
One difference between the desktop mode on Windows 8 is that the "start" button (bottom left) is no longer here! Microsoft obviously want you to use the start screen more, or just as much, as the desktop mode.
Apart from this the desktop mode functions in basically the same way as Windows 7. But lets go back to the start screen. Windows have their own App Store, meaning you can download apps to your PC or tablet. However, it is very underpopulated especially compared to Android's Google Play or Apple's App Store. If you're using a tablet then some of the more popular apps and games are available (Angry birds for example), however it can't be compared with Android or Apple at this time.
Windows 8 has received fairly mixed reviews from critics. Some criticize the modern UI and say that many users will find it hard to adjust to. However, I think it's a good thing that Microsoft is moving Windows forward with the modern metro design. It's something that they need to do if they want to successfully break into the tablet market and so why not apply it to PC's as well.
As Windows is the most popular operating system for PC's, they need to try and stay at the top. However, with tablets it's different. For example, Apples Computer OS is different to their smartphone and tablet OS. Microsoft is trying to combine the two. The "surface" tablet is their tool for doing this and it hasn't gone too well. The general reaction is that it's not good enough as a PC and it's not good enough as a tablet. It's neither and so isn't really that useful for anything. This hasn't stopped Microsoft though and they've recently announced the Surface Pro. It's faster, more powerful and hopefully generally better than the previous version.
