Google Glass Launches in UK for £1000

By Admin 23 June 2014

After the initial US release, the United Kingdom has become the second country to have access to the curious Google-developed eyewear- Google Glass.  However, the product is still not available commercially and is being targeted at developers for now (as is the same in the US).

According to the BBC, the Department of Technology (UK Gov.) held talks with the American firm ahead of the launch, and as a result the two organisations are looking into ways to allow users of the product to wear the glasses whilst driving.

"Drivers must give their full attention to the road, which is why it has been illegal since the 1980s to view a screen whilst driving, unless that screen is displaying driving information.  There are no plans to change this and we have met with Google to discuss the implications of the current law for Google Glass.  "Google is anxious its products do not pose a road safety risk and is currently considering options to allow the technology to be used in accordance with the law."

Comment:

It is not clear when we will see the glasses launched commercially, and clearly Google feels that they have some problems to overcome before such a thing happens.  Starting with the development, the firm will want as many developers as possible to have access to the hardware in order to create enough software (apps) for the device which would make the product more appealing to consumers.  Issues of privacy have also been raised by some, for example the fact that the device does have a video camera built in.  Some places in the US have already banned the use of Glass in certain locations and it wouldn't be surprising if some institutions in the UK followed suit.

The price tag remains high, similar to that of the US one.  I expect that this will drop by a fair amount before the commercial release as it would be necessary for the product to become mainstream and gain mass popularity.

To mark the UK launch, the Google Glass account on YouTube has uploaded this video:
