iOS 6- info

iOS 6
Apple have made their latest mobile phone operating system available to iPhone, iPod touch and iPad users after announcing their iPhone 5 about a week ago.
First of all, if you want to upgrade but don't know how, go to Setting> General> Software Update
The new OS features some big changes including:

  • Apple maps (Replacing Google maps)
  • No YouTube
  • Integrated Facebook
  • App store and iTunes re-designed
It also features lots of small changes, including:
  • Siri updated to support more languages
  • Facetime will now work over your mobile network, not just WiFi

Maps. Maps take a whole new turn.
First of all, Apple Maps has replaced Google Maps as the "Maps" application.  It is basically the same, however we found that it wasn't as detailed when zooming in on some areas whereas Google maps was.  The biggest difference between the two, though, is the 3D option on Apple maps.  In some places, mostly famous cities and landmarks, you can switch on 3D and move around the 3D buildings.  If you search London, then you will be able to move around and see 3D Big Ben, the London i and basically all other buildings in the centre of the city.  As well as this, Maps offers Directions and live traffic updates.

Another difference in this latest OS is that there is no built in, Dedicated YouTube App.  So far, we haven't seen one on the App store either but you can practically guarantee that it's coming. Until then though, www.youtube.com works perfectly well on the Safari Browser.

Speaking of Safari, Apple have also given that a small change.  They've incorporated iCloud into it so that if you have more than one device it automatically syncs the webpages you're on.   Google's Chrome browser already does this.

Another of the main features is Facebook.  It is now integrated through the operating system itself so you can like and share things outside of the dedicated app.  For example, now if you take a picture you can just open photo's and post it too your wall from there.  You can also like Apps in the App Store and like songs in your music.  It also syncs with your Calender and contacts from Facebook into the Calender and Contacts App on your iDevice.

The next big feature is Passbook.  Only available on iPhone, Cinema tickets, loyalty cards and vouchers are now all in this little App.  You can also check into your flight by scanning the bar code within the app as well as redeeming vouchers.

Apple have also decided to update Mail.  There's now a VIP list, which you can add contacts to and emails from them will appear in those boxes. Adding Photo's and video's to an E-mail is also now meant to be better.

There are also some entirely new features, for example guided access.  This allows you to turn on or off touch, motion and hardware buttons and also make part of the screen not touch screen.

Panorama feature for the camera allows you to take a full panorama picture.  It is, however only available on iPhone and iPod touch.

The App store and the iTunes store have also been completely re-designed, apparently making it a better experience.
